British Sign Language Class

British Sign Language or BSL for short is the name of the sign language, which is used in England and the United Kingdom. It is the first language of approximately 150,000 deaf people in the British Isles. There are also many thousands of people who are not deaf who use BSL such as employers of Deaf people, relatives/friends and interpreters.

At the Centre for Deaf People classes are currently offered on Tuesday from 7pm to 9pm. We are hoping to expand the classes in June 2010 depending on the number of people who want to learn BSL.

Candidates may then enter for Introduction to British Sign Language first. This 20-hour course is usually taught over 10 weeks, at the end of the course, you will have an opportunity to receive a certificate, having gone through an assessment of your skills. Then you go on to the next step which is Foundation Level A & B British Sign Language. A 40-hour addition to the Introduction to BSL course, this is usually taught over 20 weeks. This course offers learners the opportunity to develop their everyday BSL use. At the end of the course, you will have an opportunity to undertake two assessments of your skills and receive a two certificate. (you must undertake Introduction to BSL before you are able to join this course). The curriculum is recognised by British Deaf Association.

All these courses are recognised by National Open College Network (NOCN) and it can be accredited in any national qualification.
