Our Deaf Bristol - A Celebration of Sign Language

Our Deaf Bristol will take place during Learn To Sign Week 4th - 10th October.

Sign Language Taster Days will take place at the Centre for Deaf People and at the Council House during the week. It will culminate with the 'Our Deaf Bristol' – A Celebration of Sign Language event to be held at The Colston Hall Foyer on 9th October from 10am till 5pm.

Our Deaf Bristol is being co-ordinated by Bristol Centre for Deaf People and working with various Partners including Bristol City Council Equalities and Community Cohesion Team.

Our Deaf Bristol – A Celebration of Sign Language will showcase a host of Bristol talent in terms of deaf art and culture. It will be vibrant and extremely visual. Members of the public are invited to be part of the Sign Community for the day in the hope of inspiring people to want to learn more.

The public will be able to take part in Sign Language lessons during the day, and a host of Bristol Poets will perform an exciting array of Deaf Poetry a highly creative form of communication using British Sign Language. The genius of poetry in sign needs to be seen. Deaf films will be shown made by deaf film makers Deaf Production company VS1 will use the event as the backdrop for a documentary profiling the experiences of Deaf people growing up in Bristol.

The event will begin with a procession of African and Asian percussionists followed by a session of 'Laughing Yoga' lead by Gemma Smith who is herself Deaf.

Studio interviews of prominent deaf personalities will feature, also a Soap box where the Sign Community can 'have their say'. Deaf Mime artiste and Capoeira Dancers will captivate the audience and Deaf Fortune tellers will predict the future.

State of the art technology of benefit to Deaf people will be on display for people to experiment with. Deaf and Hearing group known as the Two Fields Choir from Elmfield school will perform a special Our Deaf Bristol sign song, and an all Deaf band will perform for the first time in front of a hearing audience.
