Environment Equipment
What is Environment Equipment?
Environment equipment consists of devices which help deaf and hard of hearing people with ordinary household activities. Under the 1986 Disabled Person Act, anyone with a hearing loss, whether or not they use an hearing aid, has the right to be assessed for the provision of environment equipment.
Who carries out the assessments?
If you live in the City of Bristol, North Somerset or Bath & North East Somerset, Environment Equipment Officers from the Centre for Deaf People will carry out the assessments in your home.
Vibrating Alarm Clocks
These Clocks are used with a vibrating pad to go under your pillow. There are also vibrating travel alarm clocks.
Portable Door Bells
These door bells run on batteries and can be moved around the house or garden. They are also available with a strobe light.
TV Aids - Infrared and Loop Systems
Infrared systems with head phones or a neck loop and loop systems that are connected to the TV or radio, receiving sound through headphones or T switch.
Amplified Telephones, Text Telephone / Faxes
Phones with amplified incoming speech and tone controls. Minicoms, textphones and fax machines are also available. These allow deaf and hard of hearing people to communicate with other people.
Pager Systems
A pager systems will alert you to the door, phone and fire alarm anywhere in your home or garden. Supplied with a vibrating pad for night time.
House Bell System
The House Bell is wired into the main lighting circuit in your home, making the lights flash in each room. This can be linked to the door, phone and intercom.
